HOUSE OF ILUM

HOUSE OF ILUM is run by siblings Orla, Mark and David Van Den Bergh. This is a project of passion inspired by their desire to share their stories through craftsmanship, expressed through both the visual and olfactory senses. ILUM comes from the Latin word illuminare, to enlighten. Influenced by travels over a lifelong journey of discovery, HOUSE OF ILUM designs have their origins in creators’ European heritage which bred in them a love of aesthetic and beauty in its many forms.

The Cosmati were an Italian family of architects in the 12th and 13th centuries who, among other things designed geometric and circular mosaic floors in cathedrals. HOUSE OF ILUM creators' were so taken by these patterns from their visits to cathedrals in Rome and Tuscany that they have brought their own version to life in these porcelain BASILICA candle and diffuser vases. Notes of aromatic incense, fonts of holy water, church flowers, amber and aged solid oak wood panelling, bring the essence of these beautiful churches into your home.

A re-creation of what HOUSE OF ILUM creators' grandfather used to wear back in the day. You could smell it as he left for work early in the morning but it would be gone when he came home, masked by cigar smoke. The pattern is inspired by a vague memory of classic hexagonal floor tiles whilst playing around their grandfathers house in Belgium. HOUSE OF ILUM creators' have tried to re work this memory using top notes of bergamot, mandarin and lemon with neroli, petit grain, orange flower, jasmine and hints of musk and amber to add a masculine touch.

SAHARA collection by HOUSE OF ILUM collection combines notes of bergamot, incense, nutmeg and clove with a rich base of amber, patchouli and vanilla to create a scent reminiscent of the African desert. Presented in a decorative porcelain vase patterned with glistening golden circles to resemble the colours of the sandy desert, it promises to complement any modern interior while filling your home with the captivatingly warming fragrance.

LATIN GROOVES collection inspired by pavement art from two of the worlds most beloved Latin port cities, Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon. Dramatic, sea like, aldehydic with attitude with a soft citrus heart and a gentle woody base. The elegant patterns adorning the porcelain vase, embellished with a golden border, symbolize the diversity and cycle of life. The fragrance of LATIN GROOVES takes the mind to a rustling and surging sea, where splashes of water bring a fragrant gust of air, full of citrus freshness, cardamom and pepper warmth and musk and amber sensuality.

The concept for OR ÉGYPTIEN started with a HOUSE OF ILUM creators' visit to the ancient pyramids. The most highly prized perfumes of the ancient world came from Egypt, which along with geranium, jasmine, green leaf and rose buds are at the heart of this fragrance. The circumpunct dot, central to this design represents gold. It is also an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for the sun. because much of their art was religious, the ancient Egyptians used colour symbolically to convey messages. The blue colour lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone, corresponded with joy. Gold corresponds with the deity of the sun.
