Few textiles have captivated the world quite like mulberry silk. Celebrated for its extraordinary softness, luminous sheen and exceptional craftsmanship, it has remained the benchmark of luxury for more than five millennia. Every thread tells a story of nature, patience and artistry - qualities that continue to define the world's finest bedding, sleepwear and home accessories.
For more than two decades, GINGERLILY has redefined everyday luxury through exquisitely crafted collections of pure mulberry silk. The British brand is celebrated for its commitment to exceptional natural materials, timeless design and uncompromising quality, transforming one of the world's most treasured fibres into elegant bedding, sleepwear and accessories designed to elevate every moment of rest.
Unlike many other silk varieties, mulberry silk is naturally bright white before dyeing, allowing it to achieve remarkable colour purity while maintaining its signature lustre. Its long continuous filaments create an exceptionally smooth fabric with an elegant drape, making it the preferred choice for luxury bedding, pillowcases, sleepwear and refined accessories.
It is this uncompromising quality that makes mulberry silk the foundation of every GINGERLILY collection, where carefully selected natural fibres are transformed into beautifully crafted pieces designed to elevate everyday living.
The journey begins with the domesticated Bombyx mori silkworm. Throughout its larval stage, it feeds exclusively on fresh white mulberry leaves. After several weeks of growth, the silkworm begins spinning its cocoon, producing a continuous filament of silk that can extend for hundreds of metres.
Once the cocoons are carefully harvested, skilled artisans gently unwind the delicate fibres before they are cleaned, spun and woven into luxurious silk fabric. Every stage demands exceptional precision, ensuring the finished textile retains the smooth texture, natural brilliance and remarkable softness that define premium mulberry silk.
This commitment to traditional craftsmanship and uncompromising quality is central to the philosophy of GINGERLILY, whose luxury silk collections are celebrated internationally for their exceptional finish and enduring elegance.
Native to China but now cultivated across Europe, Asia and North America, the white mulberry (Morus alba) provides the exclusive food source required by Bombyx mori silkworms. The health of these trees directly influences the quality of the silk they produce.
Fast-growing and remarkably resilient, mulberry trees typically reach maturity within a decade. For centuries, they have also held an important place in Chinese horticultural tradition, valued not only for silk cultivation but also for their historical and cultural significance.
The Enduring Legacy of the Mulberry Tree
Throughout history, the mulberry tree has become intertwined with mythology, royalty and literature, making it one of the most symbolic trees in the world.
Mulberry Trees in Mythology
In Chinese mythology, the sun is said to rest in the branches of a sacred mulberry tree, while in Japan, mulberry fibres have traditionally been used to create paper offerings presented at temples and shrines.
In 1608, King James I ordered the planting of thousands of mulberry trees across England in the hope of establishing a domestic silk industry. A royal mulberry garden was created on the grounds of what is now Buckingham Palace.
Although the English silk venture ultimately proved unsuccessful, many of the trees flourished, and the royal gardens remain part of Britain's rich horticultural heritage.
Mulberry Trees in Literature
The mulberry tree appears throughout classical literature, including Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is perhaps best known through the ancient legend of Pyramus and Thisbe, in which the white berries of the mulberry tree were forever stained deep crimson by the lovers' tragic fate.
Mulberries: Nature's Hidden Treasure
The mulberry tree offers more than leaves for silkworms. It also produces delicate berries that resemble blackberries, with a beautifully balanced sweet-tart flavour.
These fruits are enjoyed fresh or incorporated into jams, desserts, pastries and herbal infusions. Rich in naturally occurring vitamins and antioxidants, mulberries have long been appreciated as part of a balanced diet and continue to be celebrated in many culinary traditions around the world.
Depending on the variety, mature trees may reach heights of between 9 and 15 metres. Their gracefully twisted branches and broad canopies create a distinctive silhouette that has long been admired in landscape design.
GINGERLILY has built its reputation on celebrating these remarkable qualities through beautifully crafted silk bedding, pillowcases, sleepwear and accessories that combine timeless design with everyday comfort.
